Residential Dumpster Rental across the Valley of the Sun

Housing across the Valley is varied enough that one container does not fit all of it. The pre-war streets in Phoenix's historic districts — Roosevelt, Willo, Encanto-Palmcroft, Coronado, Garfield — want a 10 or a 15 and a driver who takes the tight drives slowly. The newer subdivisions in Gilbert, Queen Creek, Surprise and Buckeye have room for a 20 but often an HOA with its own rules. The big lots in Paradise Valley and Cave Creek are remodel and teardown country. The first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.

Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (a garage, or a whole house before a move or a sale), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring), or weather — a yard full of limbs and palm fronds after a monsoon storm, a roof that has to come off. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers; the phone call covers your job.

At a glance

What you get with residential dumpster rental

  • Flat-rate pricing quoted on the phone — delivery, 7-day rental, pickup and disposal in one number
  • Boards under the rails on your driveway when you ask
  • Same-day delivery in Phoenix and many nearby cities when you call before noon, depending on availability
  • 10, 15 and 20 yard containers for homes; 30 for whole-house renovations
  • A local dispatcher who knows which cities want a permit and which do not
  • Extensions, swaps and early pickups by a quick call

What actually fills a residential container

Garage and estate cleanouts lead the way: furniture, boxes, the contents of a shed. Kitchen and bath remodels are next — cabinets, tile, drywall, a tub. Then the Arizona jobs: a backyard redo with landscape rock and old turf, a pool deck broken up for a new one, palm fronds and limbs after a summer storm, a stucco repair.

The City of Phoenix collects household carts weekly, but construction materials and concrete are not allowed in them, and bulk trash pickup is by appointment only — four times a year, 10 cubic yards at most, one pile. Bulk will not take bricks, concrete, dirt, rock, asphalt, roofing shingles or tile, heavy building debris, tires, glass or fridges and A/C units. Anything bigger, heavier or sooner than that is what a residential roll-off is for.

Driveway placement, street permits and HOAs

On your own driveway in Phoenix we found no City permit for the container. Boards can go under the rails to protect concrete and pavers, and the driver sets the container square with the open end facing the way you want to load. If the only spot is the street, a lane or the sidewalk, that runs through Street Transportation's Right-of-Way Management Office (602-262-6235): a TRACS restriction permit, two business days' notice for a partial or sidewalk restriction and three for a full one, and a 36-inch walkway kept clear on the sidewalk. The City Code lists no application fee for a temporary right-of-way use permit.

Two more things. Many Valley neighborhoods have an HOA, and some limit how long a container can sit in a driveway — check your HOA rules before you book a long rental. And the other cities differ: Scottsdale names roll-off dumpsters in its right-of-way permit, Chandler charges $315 for a traffic control permit, Paradise Valley wants a $2,000 refundable bond. Each town page says what that city's code asks for.

Suitability

Is residential dumpster rental the right call?

The fastest way to get this right is to check the two lists below against what is actually in your pile.

Good fits for this service

  • Garage, storage and whole-house cleanouts
  • Kitchen, bath and flooring remodels
  • Moving, downsizing and estate cleanouts
  • Monsoon storm debris, fences and big yard cleanups
  • Furniture, mattresses and bulky junk

Send these somewhere else

  • Paint, solvents, fuel, propane and pool chemicals — your city's household hazardous waste program takes those
  • Tires and car batteries — Arizona law keeps them out of landfills
  • Fridges, freezers and A/C units unless the refrigerant has been professionally recovered
  • Asbestos or suspected asbestos material

Residential dumpster rental — the Arizona specifics

Arizona law bans tires (A.R.S. 44-1304) and lead-acid car batteries (A.R.S. 44-1322) from landfills, and used oil cannot be dumped on land (A.R.S. 49-803). Fridges, freezers and window A/C units need the refrigerant recovered before disposal — that is federal law. Landfills will not take free liquids. Keep all of those out of the container or expect them pulled out and charged. Two Phoenix summer rules of our own: nothing hot goes in the box — no ashes, no coals, nothing just off the grill — and ask for an early-morning drop in the heat. The what can and cannot go in guide covers where each banned item goes instead.

Answers

Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

Not if it is set properly. Ask for boards under the rails and the driver puts them down. He will tell you before delivery if a surface looks like it needs more than that — fresh pavers, a cracked slab, soft gravel.

Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?

In Phoenix, only with a right-of-way restriction permit from Street Transportation, which wants two to three business days' notice. Other cities have their own permits — Scottsdale, Chandler, Paradise Valley, Mesa and Fountain Hills all require one for anything in the street. The driveway is always simpler.

Does my HOA have a say?

Often, yes. Many Valley HOAs have rules on containers in driveways and how long they can stay. We do not know your HOA's rules — check them before you book, especially for a rental longer than a week.

Can I put old appliances in the dumpster?

Small non-hazardous appliances, yes. Fridges, freezers and A/C units, only if the refrigerant has been professionally recovered — federal law puts that on whoever disposes of them. The City of Phoenix transfer stations take refrigerated appliances at $20 each. Ask when you book and we will tell you the simplest route.

How long can I keep the container?

7 days as standard. If the job runs on, call before pickup and we extend it at a daily rate.

Do you serve outside Phoenix?

Yes — seventeen cities and towns across the Valley, from Buckeye in the west to Apache Junction in the east and Cave Creek in the north. Each has its own page. Several license the haulers that work inside their limits, and a few keep household trash for the city — we say so plainly on each page.

Service area

Residential Dumpster Rental across the Valley of the Sun

We run roll-off containers out of the Jackson Street yard to every city and town below. Phoenix and the close-in cities are usually same-day; the edges of the Valley are often next-day. Most cities license the haulers that work inside their limits, and a few keep household trash for themselves — each page says so plainly. If your town is not listed, call anyway.
